Active Risk Management
Our Philosophy
Premier Physicians participates in active risk management designed to identify, evaluate, reduce and/or eliminate risk of injury and loss to patients, employees and visitors thus minimizing the actual and potential financial impact upon the healthcare provider and/or organization.
Premier Physicians Insurance Company's Risk Management and Claims Response procedures assist physicians in avoiding or limiting negative outcomes for patients. Our locally based and professionally trained staff will work with closely a physician's practice to implement policies that reduce risk.
An additional component necessary for the continued success of Premier Physicians Insurance Company has to do with the diligence of its members in participating in risk management and continuing education courses. Offered by Premier Physicians Insurance Company's professional health care managers and clinical nurses, each member physician and their office staff are visited regularly to assure that the best practice protocols exist and are provided with an individualized risk assessment with recommendations to minimize risk and liability. The overall result being lower claims cost and improved loss histories.
Premier Physicians Insurance Company's Risk Manager, James McMahon, handles all aspects of physician operations which include risk assessments and incident/claims management. Jim also works very closely with the underwriting department and legal counsel in order to minimize risk to Premier Physicians Insurance Company's physicians.
Premier Physicians uses the following five components for active risk management:

- Risk Financing (Setting of Reserves)
Binding Arbitration as a Dispute Resolution Method
Premier Physicians encourages the use of Physician\Patient binding arbitration agreements. A well run arbitration program can be expected to result in a greater than 50% reduction in indemnity payments as compared with those in the jury system.
Further helping Premier Physicians differentiate itself is the addition of its managing legal counsel, Zuetel & Torigian, a leading law firm that continues to be in the forefront of various areas of arbitration, medical and legal malpractice and insurance law. Each member of Premier Physicians is provided with our comprehensive Risk Management Manual, including our guidebook, Physician Office Fundamentals in Risk Management and Patient Safety. Premier Physicians is pleased to have partnered up with the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI). ECRI Institute's rich history spans 40 years of applied research in healthcare. From its research roots and early transition to an evaluator of medical technologies, ECRI Institute now plays a major role in technology planning, procurement and management, patient safety, quality and risk management, healthcare policy and research, and healthcare environmental management.
The ECRI Institute is certified by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide CME credits to physicians. Some of the online CME topics include: Patient Safety and Risk Management, Regulations and Standards, Legal Basics, and Emergencies in the Physician Office.
